Bhakti lata developed a deep appreciation for bharatanatyam dance when she saw Anapayini dasi perform. At the age of 19, she asked to take classes with the renowned dancer at her school, The Bhaktikalalayam Dance Academy. There she learned to dance from the very, very beginning in an Adult Beginners class. From the moment she learned Bhumi Pranam (the opening move to offer respect to Mother Earth) a deep fire ignited within her heart to pursue this art form.
Soon, though, her fellow classmates were called to other duties, such as motherhood and a career. Bhakti lata stayed, though, and she joined classes with young girls and gradually progressed to the point of performing with the most advanced dancers in the Bhakti Dance troupe.
She is honored and delighted to share this powerful art form, which is infused with devotion at every step.
